What is an IWB?

An IWB or Interactive WhiteBoard is a system by which you can view your computer screen (such as an internet site) on a large screen. You can then interact with the screen directly, either using a pen (instead of a mouse on your computer) or by touch.

Most interactive whiteboard systems have three components:

· An interactive whiteboard (e.g. ActivBoard or SMART board)

· A data projector (this will project your computer screen onto the whiteboard surface)

· A desktop or laptop computer. As most people already have a computer, the whiteboard reseller does not usually provide the computer for the system.

An interactive whiteboard system should last for many years. As it will show any software that is on your computer, they do not become outdated as quickly as your computer will. It is an extension of your computer - you do not need to buy a new mouse or speakers every time you buy new software or upgrade your computer. An interactive whiteboard is adaptable in a similar way.

Every interactive whiteboard comes with software to use on the board. This software will let you write on the board and create your own lesson. The software varies from brand to brand, to very basic to powerful software that will let you create lessons with sound, video and games for students.
